Magic Crayon Painting

Wow your family and friends when your picture magically appears as you paint! All you need is a white crayon and some paper and paints for this simple small project. Create as many pictures as you like, once you know how!

Download Resources

You will need

White crayon (normal, not washable)
White paper (the thicker the better)
Paint (poster paint or watercolour)
Paintbrush
Water

Step 1

Use the white crayon to draw lines, shapes or a picture on the paper. 

Top Tip: Sketch your design first on a separate piece of paper and copy.

Step 2

Put different coloured paints into a palette or small containers. Add a spoonful of water to each colour and mix. The paint should become a bit watery.

Step 3

Use the paint brush to paint small sections at a time on the paper.

Step 4

Watch as your picture is magically revealed! The crayon is made of wax and is water resistant, so the paint can’t stick to what you have drawn!

Step 5

Paint the whole paper to reveal all of your design.

Step 6

Try painting multiple colours for a different effect. You could paint lines, swirls, shapes or patterns too!

Children's University entries

Just let us know you're part of the Children's University in the “How did you hear about the project?” box, and we'll email you your stamp code for taking part once we've processed your entry and added it to the Gallery.
