In collaboration with Bexley Council, award-winning nutritional therapist Louise Merceica, Spark UK and leading UK children’s book publisher Farshore, we've enlisted the help of The Naughtiest Unicorn to explore healthy choices and finding the right balance. In collaboration with Bexley Council, award-winning nutritional therapist Louise Merceica, Spark UK and leading UK children’s book publisher Farshore, we've enlisted the help of The Naughtiest Unicorn to explore healthy choices and finding the right balance.

The project promotes healthier lifestyles and gives children aged 5-8 in schools and families at home a reflective space to consider how nutritious food and physical activity can help them feel happier and stronger.

About the project

Watch the video above to see The Healthy Unicorns workshops in action and hear about the projects development from Louise Chalkley, head of the Strategic Education Partnerships at Bexley Council.

This project has been developed in collaboration with Bexley Council to raise awareness and explore constructive solutions for childhood health. The Healthy Unicorns is delivered as a workshop by the ootiboo team, but the project also offers digital resources that ootiboo schools can download and use from the At School tab of this page.

In June, ootiboo piloted a series of workshops in four Bexley schools. We are keen to expand workshop delivery beyond Bexley in the future, and encourage you to register interest to show demand, which in turn will help us source more funding.

The key aim is for students to come away with a better understanding of the interconnection and balance between healthy eating, physical activity and wellbeing (a healthy brain, a healthy body). To do this, we're focusing on three key components:

Choosing - educate children about healthy choices through storytelling.

Doing - fun activities to demonstrate how movement is so important to health.

Feeling - to highlight the importance that a healthy brain is key to a healthy body.

The project expands beyond the workshop with a series of self-care mini-projects for children to engage with at home and in the classroom. These are designed to continue the conversation about healthy choices.

Our Unicorn friends

We are really fortunate that our unicorn friends are here to help. The illustrator of the books, David O'Connell, has created brand new illustrations just for the project, and author Pip Bird has written new material so our characters can guide schoolchildren on their healthy choices journey.

The Naughtiest Unicorn

Beta test

In May, ootiboo partner school Brabourne C of E Primary opened their doors to our team, allowing us to run a beta test version of The Healthy Unicorns workshop with a mixed aged class of Year 3 and 4 students. The test was very successful, with the kids really engaging with the activities and, importantly, having lots of fun!
