Tales from the Forest
Tales from the Forest
We are bringing the world of Winnie-the-Pooh to children in the classroom via Farshore’s brand new story collection for 5-9 year olds, Winnie-the-Pooh: Tales from the Forest. The project highlights the real-life inspiration for the book, Ashdown Forest, and the conservation efforts to protect the ecology and inhabitants of this very special environment.

About the project
ootiboo schools can access our fully resourced lesson plan and support materials. There are two key activities connecting the forest with the book: firstly challenging the children's imagination with a fun naming game; secondly allowing them to get creative and design their own Tree of trees at school. Once complete, teachers can share names and tree designs by using the share form. The names and images will feature in our project gallery.
Inspired by the adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh and friends, the project focuses on the flora and fauna of Ashdown Forest and the importance of protecting its eco-system. The forest provided the backdrop for the original books back in the 1920s and there are some very real connections between the Hundred Acre Wood and the forest itself.

The Tree of Trees
Schools can participate in the project at any time, but we also had the opportunity to create a special Tales from the Forest: Tree of Trees installation in Ashdown Forest for Easter 2024.
The ootiboo team worked with local woodsman Andrew Coates to construct a unique tree design from rounds cut from the trunks of different trees that had come down in the forest. Willow branches were added to hang 1,250 leaves coloured by schoolchildren participating in the project across the UK (and a school from Malta!). The leaves were made of calico eco-friendly fabric and decorated using eco-crayons from The Natural Crayon Company.
With the installation complete, schools taking part can create their own imaginative Tree of Trees designs and share on our gallery.
The book
Winnie-the-Pooh: Tales from the Forest launched on September 28, 2023, published by Farshore. It is a fantastic new authorised sequel story collection by Jane Riordan written in the style of A.A.Milne featuring beautiful, humorous illustrations drawn by Mark Burgess, inspired by E.H.Shepard’s original, iconic decorations.
The collection celebrates the Hundred Acre Wood. The seven brand-new stories are set after the timeless tales in Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner. They take us back to much loved places that Milne’s stories and Shepard’s map introduced us to, like Eeyore’s Gloomy Place and the Poohsticks Bridge as well as new settings that Pooh and his friends have adventures in. The stories also feature trips to the British Museum and the Tower of London.
