Svalbard, the most northerly human settlement on Earth, is the home of 2,500 people and 3,000 polar bears. This spectacular landscape provides the backdrop for students to explore climate adaptation and connection around the world, which is appropriate as Svalbard is warming twice as fast as the rest of the Arctic, which itself is warming four-and-a-half times faster than the rest of the planet (wired.com).
Here's a short behind the scenes glimpse of our beta test workshop at Hillcross Primary - to find out more, click the Workshop tab above.
This project is targeted to support the National Curriculum in sciences and geography. The programme consists of six one-hour sessions, although teachers have the option to adjust the format and how it is delivered to students from Year 5 to Year 9.
Over the six sessions, three topics are covered: Glaciers, Permafrost and Habitat Loss. These are accompanied by engaging practical activities, and students will benefit from video content from an inhabitant of the island that provides a unique perspective on climate change.
You can download resources for all three topics in the Jump In section.
This is our first international project, with schools from Germany and the UK taking part so far.
School webinar
We hosted a webinar session with Jannicke to bring together schools from Germany and the UK who successfully completed the project!
